Tell us a little about your background – what led you to what you are doing today?
I have a strong artistic background. My dad is an artist, so from a very young age he would encourage me to draw and paint. We would go to museums and exhibitions, we’d sit and draw together, he taught me to draw what I see not what I think I see. When I was about 10, he started teaching me about film photography, we turned our downstairs bathroom into a dark room and processed all these amazing photos. But finding my style as a young artist was difficult, I went to a very academic based school where art wasn’t considered a subject you could gain something or make a living from. I constantly felt torn! But I always had my parents pushing me to do what I love, so I’m thankful for that.
When I was around 12 I remember telling my mum I wanted to start a makeup line. I was obsessed with the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liners! I’d always been fascinated by the colours and textures. I decided to study makeup when I was 19. I worked at a Laura Mercier counter for a while and then went on to freelance mostly working in weddings. I then went on to work in London assisting for editorials and fashion week – this is where I realised my love for fashion makeup, this is where I could really let my creative freak flag fly and it lead me to where I am today!
How would you describe your work and artistic style?
I think of makeup as a painting, there are no rules. I take a lot of my inspiration from abstract artists – I love playing with colours and shapes. I use lipstick as eyeliner and bronzer as eyeshadow. But no matter what I do, I gotta have those fluffy eyebrows…
My style of painting is different, is comes from my heart, I usually don’t know what I’ve painted until it’s finished. I work a lot with colours and emotions. It’s very therapeutic.
Who or what inspires/influences you?
My friends. I’m so so grateful to be surrounded by such incredible, creative and supportive people! We all encourage and inspire each other. Special shout out to my girl gang, I’m so in love with each and every one of you.
Who are you favourite artists/photographers/designers at the moment?
One of my favourite artists at the moment is definitely Kuro Neko – a tattoo and mural artist. I love the colours and manga inspired faces.
What is your favourite city in the world and why?
Tokyo for sure! The food, the art, the onsens, drinking plum wine in those tiny little bars… and of course Uniqlo.
How does Arthur Apparel resonate with you?
For me Arthur Apparel is about self love. It’s being creative, confident and fearless. I found great quote from Frida Kahlo – “I am my own muse. The subject I know best. The subject I want to better.”
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Ricky and Morty, Oreos and peanut butter – all at the same time.
What advice would you give your 16 year old self?
Take a deep breath and be present. You are a beautiful, confident young woman. Don’t be afraid of that.
What is the last thing you searched in google?
Do praying mantis attack humans.
What is the last song you listened to?
Buddy Miles. I love old school psychedelic rock! I think I was born in the wrong era…
What would your pet say about you if they could talk?
Oh, sorry… I didn’t think that you needed these shoelaces.
