Architect | Graphic Designer | Illustrator

Introducing the talented Weronika Marianna. Best known for her minimalist illustrations inspired by female energy, Weronika creates beautiful abstract images, embracing the female form, movement and flow.

“I talk with myself through drawings.”

Tell us a little about your background – what led you to what you are doing today?

I think it has always been clear for me that I need to make stuff. Draw, paint, design, build, remake, sew, form, write – it all came naturally to me since I was a kid. I have a degree in architecture but currently I work as a visual artist, art director and illustrator. I like doing many things at the same time and learning new skills.

How would you describe your work and artistic style?

Drawing is a way of interpreting my life, feelings and inner struggles. So it’s really personal and intimate. Through my illustrations I’m honouring feminine energy and exploring both it’s softness and it’s strength.

Who or what inspires/influences you?

Myths, legends and tales give me a lot of ideas. I love religious art: Christian Madonnas, Hindu Kalis, Islamic miniatures, all that is sacred and feminine is my cup of tea. My style is influenced by graphic traditions from Poland, my mother land, especially mid century Polish school of posters. I’m also an admirer of Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse and Milton Avery.

Who are you favourite artists/photographers/designers at the moment?

I follow so many amazing people, it’s hard to pick! Recently I fell in love with paintings by Kerry James Marshall.

What is your favourite city in the world and why?

I was born and raised in Warsaw but for the last two years I’ve lived in Amsterdam. Even though I love how beautiful and charming Amsterdam is, I find myself missing the messiness and chaos of Warsaw sometimes. But New York is definitely the city that made the biggest impression on me, I have spent a few months there ten years ago and it was real love, followed by a real heartbreak.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Black! I just can’t get enough of what a beautiful, deep, rich color it is.

What’s your guilty pleasure? (could be food, music, tv show, etc)

I could watch Gilmore Girls every day till the end of my life and never be fed up with it!

What advice would you give your 16 year old self?

Stop obsessing about what people think, stop judging yourself and others. Support your girlfriends, be kind. Follow your dreams even if nobody gets them, trust yourself. Experiment, search, try; you can always make changes, no matter if it’s the color of your hair, a boyfriend or a career choice. Nothing is permanent, so don’t freak out. You will be fine, I promise.
